YouTube has no ethics, it's been created for the sole purpose of entertainment and money." Do you agree?

I disagree with the statement.Youtube is a site where members get to upload their own personal home videos or any other videos they want to upload. In Youtube's early days, many people abused Youtube as a way to upload movies for people to easily download them causing many copyright infringements until the site administrators introduced measures like restricting all videos uploaded to be only 10 minutes long and also by making it extremely difficult for people to download videos off Youtube. This is evidence that Youtube administrators did not create the site for the sole purpose of making money otherwise they could just let people keep uploading movies and then charge other users for dowloading or viewing them.

Furthermore, when advertising firms pushed for YouTube to screen mandatory advertisements before they showed viewers the video that they wished to view, the creators of YouTube refused to do so despite knowing that it would help increase their revenues.

Many have claimed that YouTube was probably created to give movie makers a platform to showcase their works and also for people to view these videos so entertainment is a main purpose of YouTube.

However, lately there have been a number of videos that give tips on how to handle certain medical issues ranging from attention deficit disorder to effective use of inhalers. An example would be a set of instuctive video clips posted by Phil Commander on how to help autistic children. Which shows that YouTube was not created mainly for entertainment as the did not remove these informative clips even though they take up alot of their much needed storage capacity.

One may also argue that users can post pornographic, racist videos and or other kinds of content that could cause serious social implications. But, YouTube has created a system where offended parties can "flag" a video which will signal the employees to look into the matter and take down the video should it truly be offensive. This disproves the statement that YouTube has no morals.

In conclusion, although it was possible for YouTube to make money out of its users, the administrators did not do so. Although YouTube was created mainly for entertainment, it also hosts videos that teach viewers certain lessons at the cost of storage capacity. Although YouTube can purposely neglect taking down offensive content, the administrators and their emlpoyees take time and effort to remove them. Which proves that YouTube does hav ethics and strives to provide entertainment and also information to all its viewers with minimal monetary incentives.

The paper chase in Singapore and its implications

In Singapore ,although this is gradually being improved, a person's certificate or papers are the most important thing he or she requires to get promoted apart from consistently giving good quality work.In some cases however, the latter may not even be required.
Parents armed with this knowledge have learned that good examination results are very important and thus the paper chase began with children being pressured to score high marks for examinations whereas the non-acadamic aspects of their education are forsaken to allow the children more time to focus on their all important studies.
This will cause the childrens to think that exams are the only important aspect of their education. They might thus neglect taking up a Co-curricular activity(CCA) and doing CIP which will prevent them from having a holistic education.Singaporean students will thus be "exam smart" or bookworms who only know how to answer exam questions but lack initiative to bend rules, take risks or do something different which are important in the working world.
Also students will lack creativity and we will lose our competitive edge as our most important resource is our workforce and we will definitely lose out if our future workforce is incapable of creative thinking.
Therefore, measues should be taken to teach parents that that piece of paper also known as a certificate is not the most important thing. It is what their child knows, thier child's ability to think and their child's personality that is most important.

Global warming

The floods in Malaysia are by no means an unexpected disaster. It was caused due to the effect of global warming.

Global warming is caused by greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide that are being emitted into the atmosphere and this will cause heat to be "trapped" in the Earth causing rising global temperatures.

Now what is so bad about rising global temperatures? Well for one the polar ice caps will melt causin to sea levels to rise and it is causing receeding shore lines in many places that are located near the ocean or seas for example,Singapore.

Also currently many scientists have attributed the recent erratic rain to the effect of global warming and have said that climatic changes like severe droughts are happening around the world due to this increasingly severe global warming.

Furthermore, global warming also will cause stonger hurricanes and tropical storms hurting many people around the world as the frequency of such natural disasters is slowly increasing.

The worst part of this is that it is virtually certain that global warming is the result of our burning of fossil fuels that release emissions of greenhouse gases. However there is not much we can do due to our dependence on fossil fuels for electricity and such unless we completely change our lifestyles or unless an equally efficient source of energy can be found.

Many people blame the government for all the problems of the emissions but then again even with the Kyoto Protocol, where emissions of greenhouse gases are planned to be cut back by the year(2012 a deadline that isf quickly approaching), not much is being done to help the issue. This is because we still have to depend on the buring of fuels for most of our daily routines like driving and turning on the air-conditioner etc.

Although certain "green projects" have been carried out by our government, there is only so much one country can do since America is one of the largest greenhouse gas emitters in the world. An alternative source of energy would be the most easily accepted method of reducing emissions as there would be no need to change our lifestyles to save the envirnment.

Therefore i feel that unless an alternative source of energy is found it will be extremely difficult for this problem of global warming to be solved. At most, it can only be maintained or alleviated.

The family plays a critical role in our society and in the training of the generation to come.Is this true of your society?

The family is the basic unit of society however this is becoming less true with the younger generations as the notion of family has changed drastically.

In earlier generations, people had no qualms staying with their parents and about a family of three generations could stay under one roof.Nowadays newly weds have trouble even staying close to their parents' houses and are reluctant to even have children. Which is why its is not wrong to say that the idea of a family has changed drastically.

Families play a unique role in the society by ensuring that the younger generation socialised into the norms and values of the society that they live in.This is because in society there are many unspoken rules and codes of cconduct that adults are expected to follow therefore people under the age of 18 are still considered children as they may not fully understand or know all these rules. While there are people in specialised occupations to teach children these social norms and moral values, most of the time,a child's parents serve to be the best teachers around.

The family can also help to regulate sexual activity.(although personally Singapore needs a higher rate of reproduction so with the low birth rates it may not be so ideal to model after parents in this aspect)However this is important as it will help prevent troublesome situations from happening like unplanned pregnancies so the family must try to teach the children the proper moral values to prevent such problems from happening as it could be easily avoided.

The family will also provide economic suppport for their children as they are still unable to support themselves. They will also try to impart life skills onto their children to help them to survive out in society and also this way the children can obtain common sense

Tis true to only a certain extent as in my sopciety parents would now focus more on their career and may not be so focused on teaching the younger generation so these children will slowly learn these values from other places such as the staff at a daycare centre the child may be attending.

This is not such a good thing as bad influences from the media may corrupt a child's moral values as he would still not know right from wrong.Furthermore, family ties will help to instill positive values better as the child looks up to the parents and will probably learn more from what his parents say.

As for providing economic support this is an obvious need for a child as the child posses no skills to support him or herself so this is also where the family plays a crucial role in society.

In conclusion, although families are not as tight-knit as they were before, and although the family may not always be focusing all of their attention on the young, they are still crucial to society as they are needed to support, teach and socialise the younger generation as without them the younger generation to come would be uneducated and would display little or no moral values and that would not be a very good reflection on our society
